Aspiring Actor

If you’re aspiring to be an actor, Dramanic unfortunately won’t be for you at this stage. We exist to help professionally trained and working actors.

While there is definitely no one certain route to working professionally, we subscribe to the view that given the immense competition that exists, you put yourself in a much better position by getting good quality actor training and experience. The website Get Into Theatre is quite good at offering sound advice. You should also look into The Actors Centre - it is the UK’s leading organisation which supports actors throughout their professional careers. They have an Industry Membership which is designed for anyone working in the performing arts, but also aimed at aspiring actors who don’t meet the criteria for their specific Actor Membership. It gives you access to a selected programme of workshops and masterclasses, perks, discounts, networking and social events.

Doing a short taster course does not constitute training, although it’s not a bad starting point. Training undoubtedly involves a huge investment of time and money. Do your research as thoroughly as you can and don’t rush. You need to find what will suit you best. Therefore go to theatres, see a variety of shows, talk to the actors where possible, go to drama school open days and get a sense of what’s required. Many theatres and theatre companies run acting workshops which is a good place to taste elements of training and to more importantly, ask questions. After-show discussion sessions are also a good forum for getting an insight into the industry and again, asking questions. Acting is both a job and a lifestyle and the biggest rewards come from the doing of it. Whatever training you get won’t guarantee you jobs and more specifically won’t necessarily pay bills. You must be practical and find ways of earning money while pursuing your acting. You may also find yourself in a position where the financial rewards come quite quickly, but in either case you must always remain pragmatic. The love of the craft should always come first and then finding how you can lead your life in the pursuit of it.

We hope this little nugget of advice is useful in helping you know where to start or how to move forward. Once you’ve got yourself to the point of being able to work professionally, do come back and check out Dramanic.
